Ankle sprains are among the most common musculoskeletal injuries in athletes and recurrence is frequent. Decisions surrounding sports resumption after an ankle sprain can be difficult and must be made based on relevant criteria. Unfortunately, to date, no clear criteria have been established for return to sport after an acute ankle sprain, which may explain the high recurrence rate and prevalence of persistent symptoms such as instability and/or "giving way."
Regarding the criteria for sport and functional performance, jumps, agility, and sport-specific activities should be well tolerated. The final criterion in the decision for return to sport is the ability to complete a full training session. For this, you will need a sport-specific program established by your physical therapist.
